Praia de Alvor is one of the biggest and most spectacular beaches from Algarve area of Portugal. About 3.5 km long, this beach is ideal for sunbathing, walking around and lots of water activities.

The white fine sand, the pure seas of the Atlantic Ocean and the beautiful sunsets attract people here. The nature of Praia de Alvor itself especially, its surroundings are not so easy but very endearing. Although close to the city, the beach is a tranquil haven to escape from hectic life, as dunes and the Ria de Alvor Nature Reserve flora and fauna surround it.

Praia de Alvor – The Ultimate Guide

Sand and Sea Alvor Beach

Bright, white sand at Alvor Beach is smooth and good for lying on. Even on a busy tourist season beach does not feel crowded as it is big, flat and spacious. Most people are at the middle of the beach but it is quite quieter in the east and west side. Alvor Beach Sea is clear but sometimes feels cold as it originates from Atlantic ocean.

During hot summer days swimming here is extremely refreshing, if you’re with friends. But sometimes there are strong streams, so be careful, especially when you have children with you. There are big rocks around the water in the east part of beach so it’s better to swim on the middle or west part of beach where the water is clear and safe.

Best Time to Visit

Praia de Alvor – The Ultimate Guide

The best season to exit the Praia de Alvor is the summer that is from June to September. The weather during this time is warm and sea is calm. But there can be a lot of people at the beach, which can be a problem if you don’t like a lot of people. If you would like a quieter time, then May or the end of October is preferable.

There is still nice weather then and fewer people are about. It is always special to watch the sunset here. The sunset makes the beach even more beautiful as the sun nibbles to rest, making the sand take the beautiful color of orange and pink. It’s a calm and pleasant moment to enjoy.

Alvor Boardwalk and Nature Reserve I asked that next to it lies the Ria de Alvor Nature Reserve, a wetland that is rich in both fauna and mostly avian species. Within the dunes and the nature reserve, a 3-kilometer-long wooden deck provides a panoramic view of the estuary, river, and surrounding areas. Birdwatchers will be amazed by the variety of birds they are likely to see during their trip along the boardwalk.

There are also few viewpoints where people can make stunning observations of rivers merging with the sea. At the end of the boardwalk stands the green and white lighthouse, which gives the bird's-eye view of Alvor and the neighboring Lagos.

Dunes and Wildlife

Praia de Alvor – The Ultimate Guide

The sand at Praia de Alvor serves to shield the beach from the hale and hard sea waves. The dunes are around the beach are very important as they support local vegetation and a natural barrier between the beach and nature reserve. Such dunes are the natural habitat of numerous small plants, birds and animals; they are especially valuable from the point of view of wildlife.

Both walking on the sand or along the wooden road is pretty nice activity (particularly, for those who appreciate nature). Only a few meters away from the dunes you have the Alvor River, which is also very popular for water sports such as kitesurfing, windsurfing, kayaking and jet skiing. For adventure lovers, such types of adventure as jungle trekking and a river rafting are brilliant ways to visit the area.

Praia de Alvor – Th

Praia de Alvor is sandy beach with soft white sand. Due to its large size and natural diversity it is absolutely ideal for a great many activities. One can walk long to the shoreline especially in low tide when you can pick shell or just relax in the tranquil environment. If you travel beyond the shore, the cliffs of Praia dos Três Irmos and Meia Praia are considered some of the most beautiful in the Algarve. These cliffs offer spectacular views of the ocean and the coast further down, making regular hikes a perfect experience for shutterbugs and any scenery lover.

Alvor Town

Praia de Alvor town

A Combination of Custom and Tourism The town of Alvor looks quite traditional, but the new expansion has made it one of the tourists' most preferred destinations. Speaking of which, roam through the square surrounded by narrow streets, where you will find shops and cafes, as well as the baroque Alvor Church.

Another sight in the town is the old castle. It is rather small and not that interesting to all. But at night, many bars and restaurant will open, serving local Portuguese food and dishes as well as those from elsewhere around the world. The atmosphere is one where there’s plenty of energy but there are no hard feelings, which is a pretty good place to rest after a day at the beach and enjoy a meal.

Restaurants

Several excellent restaurants are located right near Praia de Alvor, offering a range of cuisines and price points. Dunas Beach Restaurant is where one does not have to swim in the sea to get there; it has good food, though slightly overpriced.

5 Quinas: Less than two minutes away from the shore, there is a perfect place to have a relaxed meal. Restinga Ria: Essen is known for its excellent food and marvelous views of the sea and the adjacent beach. For more restaurants, you move into Alvor town, which favorably rates the availability of restaurants that offer traditional and global foods.

Accommodation: Where to Stay

There is also a lot of accommodation near Praia de Alvor to suit all tastes and budgets. One of the solutions is the Pestana D. João II Beach & Golf Resort, a 4-star hotel with 3 outdoor swimming-pools and a restaurant where you can find traditional Portuguese as well as international food services.

Public transport, you can take daily buses from Lagos, Portimão to Alvor. The beach is a very short walk from town. If you are staying in Alvor it is quite easy to get to the beach by foot.
