Explore Alvor, Portugal: A Travel Guide in 2024

Alvor on the coast of Portugal's Algarve mixes old and new. The peaceful fishing town has become a popular tourist spot while keeping its cuteness. Within its historic center, narrow cobblestone streets, whitewashed buildings, and old Moorish architecture attract tourists.

The blue Atlantic Ocean stands out against the historic town of Alvor and its beautiful beaches, such as Praia dos Três Irmãos and others. Portimão is a small city with about 50,000 people, and Lagos is famous for surfing and tourists. You'll need a car to get to Monchique, other lovely beaches, and the rocky west coast of the Algarve.

Alvor, a picturesque town on the southern coast of Portugal, enjoys a Mediterranean climate with mild winters and warm summers. The best time to visit is spring (March to May) and fall (September to October) when the weather is pleasant and the crowds are smaller.

The summer months (June to August) can be busy, but perfect for beach lovers seeking sunny days and warm waters. Winter (December to February) offers a quieter experience, ideal for a peaceful getaway.

Airport to Alvor.

Many cities and beaches in the Algarve are hard to access by public transport; therefore, renting a car is advisable. On the A22 toll road, Alvor is 50 minutes from Faro Airport and 75 minutes on the N125.

Hoppa.com provides Faro Airport shuttle bus tickets. It is the best alternative for those on a budget or who want something other than an airport transfer, as Faro Airport and Alvor don't have direct public transport (see below).

Uber/Taxi: Taxis and Ubers are available outside Faro Airport. An airport transfer is usually cheaper than a cab, so booking one in advance is best.

Buses and trains need to connect Faro Airport to Alvorr. Taxis or the airport bus (bus #16) will take you to Faro, where you can connect.

Steeped in history, Alvor dates back to Roman times when it was known as 'Portus Hannibal.' General Aníbal Barca of Carthage built it as a trade port in 436 B.C. and named it Portus Hannibalis.

The town grew up near the water, near Vila Velha. In the Iron Age, a Celtic castor ruled the mouth of the river. Over the years, the town has absorbed elements of various cultures, including the Moors and Christians, leaving behind a rich tapestry of architectural styles and traditions. Its history is evident in its charming cobblestone streets, whitewashed buildings, and historical landmarks.

Castelo de Alvor

Perched on a hill overlooking the town, the ruins of Castelo de Alvor offer a glimpse into its medieval past. It was founded in 436 B. The first fortification was built in the 7th century B.C.E. from Phoenician, Greek, and Carthaginian fragments on a Lusitanian Castro village. In 436, Hannibal seized the Carthaginian fort and renamed it Portus Annibalis, later Barcínia.

Teresa Gamito's excavations showed that it was a pre-Roman population and trade center. Alvor's function evolved little after the Roman conquest. It fell to the Moors in 716 but preserved its political and commercial importance from earlier cultures.

Visitors can explore the ancient walls, towers, and courtyards while enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Take the chance to capture stunning sunset photos from this vantage point.

Igreja do Divino Salvador – The Mother Church of Alvor

The most outstanding feature is the Manueline-style gateway of the 16th-century Church of the Divine Saviour, Matriz de Feature. In the 18th century, the people primarily restored this Algarvian church in Rococo style. Three naves and magnificent vaulting, some from the old church, make the interior spectacular. The 16th century saw a grand high altar and holy water font.

The church, dating back to the 16th century, symbolizes its religious heritage and a peaceful retreat for reflection. Attend a Sunday mass to experience the local community's spiritual traditions firsthand.

Marginal de Alvor

Walk along the busy waterfront promenade of Marginal de Alvor, lined with cute shops, restaurants, and cafes. You can eat fresh seafood, look for one-of-a-kind gifts, or chill out on the beach and watch the fishing boats come and go.

"Its mix of history, natural beauty, and warm hospitality make it a must-see for travelers looking for an authentic Portuguese experience." It's easy to enjoy the town's lively atmosphere and stunning coastline from Marginal de. Find out what it is like and make memories that will last a lifetime.

The boardwalk in Alvor is called Passadicos de, and it's made of beautiful wood and winds through the beautiful Ria de nature reserve. The peaceful boardwalk offers stunning views of the area's salt flats, marshes, and birds. It is a great place to take a slow walk or a quiet jog while enjoying its natural scenery.

Praia de Alvor

Praia de Alvor, is perfect. Dunes and a wooden boardwalk back this golden strand for several kilometers. There's enough space to find a peaceful corner even on a crowded summer day.

Substantial stone slabs form a barrier at the western beach end. Grab a good book and a smooth rock for a sunny afternoon of reading. Lounging on these rocks with sun-speckled waves was among my favorite days.

Surfing, kitesurfing, and swimming are every day at Praia de. Visit one of the boardwalk's casual seaside restaurants to refuel between activities.

Praia dos Três Irmãos

Visit Praia dos Três Irmãos, popularly known as The Three Brothers Beach, for a more private beach experience. This gem is tucked between cliffs and has beautiful rock forms that make quiet coves and nooks. A tranquil day by the shore, away from the crowds, to unwind and connect with nature is ideal here.

Praia de Carvoeiro

Although not here, Carvoeiro Beach is worth the 30-minute drive. Carvoeiro is a beautiful tourist town on the coast of the Algarve that used to be a fishing village. The city on the cliff's edge is a maze of brightly colored homes and whitewashed cottages.

The best part is Carvoeiro Beach. This small but lovely beach has golden sand. The orange rocks on either side of Carvoeiro Beach are always there to protect it. It might be hard to escape during the summer when the beach is full of people from all over.

There are dive shops close to Carvoeiro. You can see the coast from rocks, jogging paths, and boardwalks.
